A Primary Care Provider's Guide to Autism Spectrum Disorder

MUSC Children’s Health developmental pediatrician Jane M. Charles, M.D., and clinical psychologist Laura Carpenter, Ph.D., discuss the importance of recognizing autism spectrum disorder early so that children can promptly receive applied behavioral therapy (ABA). Evidence shows that ABA, when administered early, can improve social interaction and communication. They also provide tips for managing behavioral problems, for example by recognizing underlying physiologic issues.
